What to Visit in Hoi An ?
Hoi An Ancient town
You will walk here day and night, it’s beautiful (see the Maps above). The main street is the one with the old Japanese bridge. In this street, between the old little houses, there are temples and little museums. In order to be able to visit inside the museums you need to buy a ticket at one of the nearby tourist booths.
It costs about 6 dollars. With this ticket, you can visit 5 sites (small museums) and if you want to visit more than 5, you can pay individually, a small extra, by showing the original ticket.
It’s very easy to spot the attractions, just walk along the main little street.
The Japanese bridge is the most notorious attraction, it was constructed around year 1600.
Inside the bridge :
At night, the bridge is quiet, all the tourists are in the night market :
Many Temples are in the ancient town :
Some dogs who live in the courtyards of the temples :
Beautiful gates :
This pig was not lucky, although it was the year of the pig, by the Chinese calendar :
There is an ancient house to be visited. A family is still living here, from many generations :

Hoi An Beaches
Look at the following Map :
There are beaches in front of Hoi An. They are quiet, it is not Copacabana and Ipanema.
“An Bang” beach is the closest to the city center and it is pleasant.
I even found a real Cappuccino machine at the entrance to the beach (and good croissants).
You can relax on the beach or if you prefer be towed by a parachute.
Along the road parallel to the beaches, there are hotels. It is all very quiet compared to the city of Hoi An.
How to get there ?
The aerial distance is about 4 Km, by the shortest road 5 Km. Look on the interactive map, above.
By bicycle
Tourists like to arrive to the beaches by bike. The hotels in Hoi An are providing free bikes to the guests. The bike I received had extra accessories that I did not need but did not have brakes that I really wanted (almost no brakes left). The bikes are not comfortable for riding (if you are used to ride a mountain bike). So the second time, I just walked from Hoi An to the beaches and listened to music on the way.
There are rice fields, on the way :
By Taxi or Grab (car or motorbike)
It is a common trajectory for Taxis. At “An Nang beach”, there are Taxis waiting for the return way.

Ba Na hills + Marble mountains
These attractions are closer to Da-Nang but you can arrive to them also from Hoi An, there are many organised tours (or you can arrive on your own by Taxi, Grab or rented motorbike).
In Ba Na hills park, there is this bridge :
And in the marble mountains there is this view :
You can book an organised trip to Ba-Na hills and the Marble Mountains online.
See about Ba Na hills (+ how to arrive) in the Da-Nang page.
See about the Marble mountains (+ how to arrive) in the Da-Nang page.
My Son Sanctuary
Ruins of ancient Hindu temples. A Unesco site, situated about 40 Km from Hoi An.
Constructed between the 4th and the 14th century.
See location on the interactive map, above. See historical details in Wikipedia.
First, you buy a ticket at the entrance :
Then, a buggy car takes you to the ruins. It is also possible to walk (about 1 Km), but it is usually very hot in this area.
Except the ruins, there are some green areas, with small rivers.
There are some internal rooms to visit
It is nice to make an excursion to My Son ruins, but if you are limited in time and you are not an archeologist expert, consider skipping this visit . Similar ruins can be seen in other places in Asia (Angkor Wat, Cambodia or even Chiang Mai, Thailand).
How to get there ?
- Organized tour, Taxi, Grab (car or motorbike), rented motorbike
- You can book an organised trip to Son Sanctuary online.
Note : You can also visit My Son from Da-Nang city. It is about the same distance.
Cham Island (Cu Lao Cham)
Just wanted you to know this island exists, in front of Hoi An. It is a quiet island and not popular as a tourist destination.
How to get there ?
Ask the many travel agencies in town and they will offer you an organised tour including the transports to the beach and the speed boat.
Organised Excursions from Hoi An
There are a lot of organised excursions from Hoi An. There are bike tours, motorbike tours and walking tours. For example :
- Ba Na Hills – Golden Bridge
