Map – Potential Central Zones to Stay in Hanoi
Look at the following Map. I have divided the Center of Hanoi in several zones :
The center of gravity of Hanoi is (what I call) the “central lake” (Hoan Kiem lake) and more specifically the square above it, marked as a red star on the Map above (Square “Kinh Nghia Thuc”). You can see more about this lake in the Tourist Attractions page.
Zone 1 (see on Map) – Old Quarter – North part
Located above the central lake. This is the most busy quarter of Hanoi. As a pedestrian, you will always walk on the road, because the sidewalk is occupied with motorcycles or stools of the cafés. At night, this is the most animated place, with a lot of restaurants and cafés.
There is also a night market and a day market here (Dong Xuan market).
It is very central. It is close to the lake, and to the main nightlife of Hanoi and to “Long Bien” bridge”.

The Map is a great way to search for the right hotel (you immediately see the price and the score received by visitors).
Zone 2 (see on Map) – Old Quarter – West part
Also close to the lake. The St. Joseph’s Cathedral is here. It is a pleasant and very central location. There are a lot of budget hotels here.
In the evening the square of the St. Joseph’s Cathedral is nice, but for intense nightlife, it is better to go to the north part.
The location is also at a reasonable walking distance to the Hanoi Street Train – (Cafés on rail) and also to the museums south of the lake, like : Hoa Lo Prison museum and Vietnamese Women’s Museum and also close to the Opera House.

Zone 3 (see on Map) – Old Quarter – South part
Here is located the opera house. It is a fancy quarter with embassies and some expensive restaurants. Also some luxury hotels are here. For example : Hotel de l’Opera beside the opera house. Melia Hanoi is where Kim Jong Un from North Korea stayed when he came to Hanoi to meet Trump in 2019.
Here in the photo, is the fashion mall, at the south part of the lake.
And this is a nice square, near the Opera house :

Zone 4 (see on Map) – Truc Back lake
This is a cool place to stay, much quieter than the old quarter of Hanoi. You will have a good quality of life here but you may need more than half an hour of walk to arrive to the restaurants of the northern part of the old quarter.

Zone 5 (see on Map) – Train Station
You may prefer to sleep one night, close to the railway station, before or after a trip with the train (for Sapa or Halong Bay, for example). The train station is not too far from the central lake, but not at a walking distance with suitcases.

Zone 6 (see on Map) – Ba-Dinh, the Left Part
This zone is not the center. It is a little bit far from the central lake and if you live here you will need some transport. The reason to live far from the lake is for having better conditions of the hotel at a better price.

Zone 7 – Near the Airport
The airport of Hanoi is 23 Km (line distance) from the center and it takes about 1 hour to reach it with a bus. You may prefer to sleep 1 night near the airport before or after a flight.

A note about the Hotels in Hanoi
There are a lot of Hotels in Hanoi, for all budgets, but there are also a lot of tourists (almost all tourists to Vietnam are visiting also Hanoi). On the high season (January to May) it may be difficult to find a free room on the most liked hotels. I had to switch many times hotels during my stays because the hotel was already reserved for the next dates.
