The Metro Line in Saigon

Since January 2025 there is finally 1 Metro line in Saigon. It took 25 years to plan and to bild it, but it is finally here.

As a tourist, this line won’t be of much utility because it is mainly a suburban line.

Still, you may want to use this line for some cases. Look at the following picture :
Ben Thanh Market is the first station of the line.

Case 1 : Inside the Town Center

There are 2 stations in the center of the town : Ben Thanh (the famous market) and the Opera House. The distance between these places is short (800 meters) and you will probably prefer to walk instead of taking the Metro.

  • See location of the Metro Station Ben Thanh on Google Maps.
  • See location of the Metro Station Opera House on Google Maps.

There is a third station, at the top border of the city center. It is called Ba Son. You can use this metro station to arrive to the top of the Japanese quarter.

  • See location of the Metro Station Ba Son on Google Maps.

Case 2 : To Theo Dien (District 2)

This is the most useful case (for a typical tourist) to use the Metro line. Theo Dien is the neighborhood where many expatriates live in Saigon. Therefore, there are many good western restaurants and it is a lively place in the evenings. I describe it here.
From the center of Saigon (Ben Thanh market or the Opera House) you just need to travel 5 stations and you arrive to Theo Dien. It is very fast compared to the alternatives.

Case 3 : To Landmark 81 – Skyscraper and Park

I describe the place here. The Metro line will bring you nearby. At the moment that I am writing there is not a pedestrian bridge from the Metro station to the area of the skyscraper but there will probably be in the future.

The Metro station is called : Tan Cang. Only 4 stations from Ben Thanh Market.

Case 4 : To the Swimming Pool “Van Thanh”

I describe the place here. This is a swimming pool, open to the sky, quite popular by the expatriates.  The Metro will bring you exactly there.

The Metro station is called : Van Thanh Park. Only 3 stations from Ben Thanh Market.

How is the Metro of Saigon ?

  1. First of all, the Metro is fast. The trains run fast. You can arrive in 10 minutes from the center to District 2.
  2. It is safe : You feel much safer than using the roads with a motorbike or a car
  3. It is cheap. Tickets are very affordable for a Tourist.

It is of course not perfect :

  1. There are no automatic stairs in all the entrances.
  2. The location of the stations is sometimes far from the main attraction.

Notes :

  • Most of the line runs above ground, except 3 stations in the center which are underground.
  • There is a Smartphone Application of the Metro Company (HURC) with info and tickets. You can download the application on Google Play or Apple Store.
  • For now, there is only 1 Metro line. More lines are in planning, but it will take time…
